Review of Professor T: Season 2 Episode 2 The Mask Murderers

Professor T wakes up and dons his robe but struggles to put his arm in, then collapses to the floor in discomfort.

After hearing a loud noise, he makes his way to his mother’s studio, where he discovers her using a paint gun to create a portrait of Kafka, her beloved dog.

His mother, Adelaide is surprised to see him and almost shoots him. She comments that the Professor looks poorly and that it is from him stirring up the past. She ends her message with ‘Evolve or die, Jasper.’

Case:
DI Rabbit is at the scene of a crime, two masked people, William Tidswell and his second wife Jean Tidswell have been shot in the head, their blood pooling on the table.

The couple’s arms are tied to a chair, Rabbit notices the rope he immediately calls Christina.

As they are leaving the crime scene, Donckers hears someone crying and she finds Stephanie Tidswell, Jean’s daughter.

Christina and Rabbit explain that there was an identical double murder of Edward and Genevieve Lansing using the same knot 15 years ago.

Danny Gedge had already been convicted for the Lansing murders, he was caught on CCTV buying the masks. None of the information about the double murders were made public, so it couldn’t be a copycat murder. Further to that, William Tidswell was the prosecution barrister on Gedge’s murder trial. Christina and Rabbit are concerned about the Tidswell case as Gedge has an upcoming parole hearing and he could be released if there is a hint of doubt on the case.

Outside the Professor’s office, Ingrid has been searching for someone to teach the professor’s class while he is in the hospital.

The Professor imagines himself teaching his class on Anderson’s heat hypothesis. This is the theory that hot temperatures can increase aggressive behaviours.

A nurse can be heard trying to wake Professor T up, she explains that the Professor is in the hospital because he has acute appendicitis. The nurse remarks that his appendicitis looked radioactive! His nurse proceeds to talk to the Professor like a child and when the Professor says he has an IQ of 160, she laughs in his face.

Stephanie Tidswell is in the same hospital as the Professor, she is suffering from catatonic post traumatic stress. Although the Professor is in the hospital he decides to find out more information on the Tidswell case.

Donckers visits the hospital to see Stephanie but is not able to visit the Professor as Christina has warned them to leave the Professor alone. Ingrid, his assistant sees Donckers and asks if she can give him some light reading material in the form of the case files, which she happily agrees to.

The Professor exits the toilets with a plate in his hand, having flushed his food. When he enters his room he sees his clothes, a chess board, his hygiene equipment and a case file. This relieves him and he thanks Ingrid (Ms Snares). It’s revealed that the Dean helped Ingrid with providing the Professors belonging which they called ‘Operation clingfilm’.

The Professor’s nurse comments that William’s first wife looks similar to his son Robert’s girlfriend and that men usually get into relationships with women who look like their mother. Professor T disagrees with this stating that there is an exception to every rule.

At a nightclub Calvin and Winters are at a club. Calvin explains he is freelancing and that most police officers have second jobs. His own second job involves private security, which is actually against police regulations. He then offers to put in a good word for Winters, suggesting he could join him in this line of work as well.

Donckers’ dad is escorted into the police office, and it is explained that he was outside calling Donckers’ name. He is upset and tells Donckers that her mum has left him, claiming she doesnt love him anymore.

Donckers’ is speechless and tears start to well in her eyes, Winters quickly comes to the rescue and explains that Donckers’ mum had gone to the shops. Winters offers to make him a cup of tea and the two go to the kitchen area.

Donckers is relieved by Winters assistance and her smile widens, it’s such a beautiful scene to watch. She had always been insistent on keeping her private life and work life separate, although she is mainly speaking of her love life. It’s clear that she has been having a tough time with caring for her father, juggling a tricky relationship situation and her job. DI Rabbit at first looks uncomfortable then softens towards Donckers.

Christina meets the Professor on the roof, she warmly lets him know that she admires his decision to speak to someone about his past. She doesn’t know if he’s doing it for her, she reaches her hand out and grasps his hand. Professor T remarks that he is doing it for himself, she then drops her hand but he then further mentions that he wants to experience happiness and make others happy. The two smile and he reaches his finger out to her, and holds her pinky finger.
